Piano No Mori (TV)

Forest of Piano is a story that follows Kai Ichinose, a boy who lives in the red light district but escapes at night to play the piano in the forest. Shuhei Amamiya, the grade-school son of a professional pianist, transfers to Moriwaki Elementary, Kai's elementary school. But it doesn't take long before Shuhei is picked on by the class bullies, and gets involved in a dare to play the mysterious piano in the forest, leading to his meeting with Kai, who seems to be the only one capable of getting sound out of the thought-to-be broken piano. Kai's ability earns him the respect of Shuhei and his music teacher, former master pianist Sosuke Ajino. Both Shuhei and Ajino try to get Kai to take proper piano lessons, but Kai is at first resistant to refining his piano-playing technique. However, after hearing Sosuke play a Chopin piece he just can't seem to play himself, he relents.

The story is centered on Ichinose Kai, a young boy who escapes his life in the red light district by playing a piano abandoned in the woods and later meets a bullied child prodigy. This encounter leads to him being introduced to a top piano teacher and former concert pianist.

Piano no Mori ("Forest of the Piano"), a seinen manga by Makoto Isshiki about a young man who teaches himself music on an abandoned piano that he found in the woods, is being adapted into a TV anime that will broadcast on the NHK network in April of 2018.

Piano no Mori was originally serialized from 1998 - 2015 in Kodansha's Monthly Younger Uppers and Weekly Morning seinen manga magazines. The story follows Kai Ichinose, a boy who grows up to pursue a career as a professional pianist after discovering a seemingly broken piano in the forest.

What I found fascinating is that Forest of Piano pits these two characters against each other. Kai Ichinose loves his one piano in the forest due to the emotional baggage that keeps him attached to it. Once his talent is found by Mr Ajino (voice byYou Taichi), a respected pianist and teacher, his transition from the love of the piano to grasping professionalism are sweet and heartwarming. You can sense his struggle to adapt into a world he did not grow up in. Yet Shuhei Amamiya sees him as his main rival and lacks the upbringing to understand how to properly engage.

Kai was born as the son of a prostitute and he's been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. Shūhei, on the other hand, was practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

The stakes have never been higher, and the judges are rigorous when it comes to selecting the winner out of the plethora of talented pianists. This competition is so harsh that even famous prodigies can be easily eliminated. Some play for the money, some play to fulfill their duty to their families, and yet others play for their music to be heard. However, the only one who can reach the top is the one who embodies the spirit of the music Frédéric Chopin crafted for future generations. With the stakes higher than ever before, rivalries, friendships, and family ties will be tested, and each pianist will find their own sound.
